KEY POINTS:
Police believe that a man who was the subject of a sea and air search after his empty canoe was found in Wellington Harbour yesterday is alive.
Police originally thought the man might have fallen out of his kayak, which was found washed up Pencarrow Head near the Wellington Harbour entrance yesterday afternoon.
However, Inspector James Tarrie of Wellington police communications said today someone had called to report the "missing" man had been sighted in the city.
"He was spotted by someone who'd heard the news report in Wellington last night," Mr Tarrie said.
Police were now trying to locate the man.
