Missing G on ‘Gizzy’ sign taken in for repairs after vandalism

A missing G on Gisborne’s ‘Gizzy’ sign caused a social media stir this week but it will be back home in time for the weekend.

Eastland Port installed the light-up sign in October last year.

Members of the public began to notice the absence of the letter at the waterfront of the city harbour on Tuesday morning.

A social media post asking “who stole the letter G“ from the sign with a photo of the new look “izzy” sign had hundreds of reactions and more than 170 comments on Wednesday.

Eastland Port has confirmed the letter was not stolen, but it had been damaged.

“Last week two young men damaged the “G” from our Gizzy sign so it was taken away yesterday for some TLC and will return in time for the sunshine this weekend," an Eastland Port spokeswoman told the Gisborne Herald.

“We hope our community and visitors can continue to enjoy this asset like they have for the last three months.”

Eastland Port, in a post on social media, said the incident when the damage took place had been caught on camera.
