KEY POINTS:
The 10-month-old baby who was allegedly hidden by her mother after an order was issued to hand her to authorities is "safe and sound" in Child Youth and Family care, police said today.
Nelson area commander Inspector Brian McGurk said a Family Court hearing in Lower Hutt this morning made the little girl a ward of the court.
This afternoon the baby was seen by a paediatrician at Nelson Hospital.
"This little girl is now safe and sound and Child Youth and Family Services are now working with the family to achieve the best possible outcomes for the baby girl," Mr McGurk said.
The mother of the girl was co-operating with social workers, he said.
Earlier Mr McGurk said the baby's grandmother had concerns about her care and obtained an interim parenting order from the Family Court last week.
A warrant to enforce the order was issued, but the baby's mother and her friends had tried to conceal the whereabouts of the child from police, he said.
In the Nelson District Court on Tuesday the mother admitted obstructing police. She was remanded on bail until July 31.
