Corrections Minister Damien O'Connor says he is going to again meet the family of murder victim Karl Kuchenbecker.
National Party MPs have been pressing Mr O'Connor to make a public apology for the death of Mr Kuchenbecker, who was killed by Graeme Burton after Burton had been released from prison on parole.
They have also questioned whether Mr O'Connor has properly apologised to the Kuchenbecker family.
The father of the murder victim, Paul Kuchenbecker, said this morning he had received a personal apology from Mr O'Connor but did not consider that to have been a formal apology.
Questioned in Parliament today by National's deputy leader Bill English, Mr O'Connor said: "I have now initiated contact with the family and extended an invitation to meet them at any time.
"I will meet Mr Kuchenbecker and his wife. I will not tell that member what I might be prepared to say to them."
Mr O'Connor has previously said he expressed to the family his sorrow for the loss of their son and gave a commitment to do everything in his power to prevent such a tragedy occurring again.
