New Zealand On Air is spending $3.8 million on two new comedy shows with a strong Samoan influence, and a drama about the effects of a volcanic eruption on Auckland.
It announced yesterday an allocation of $1.75 million for eight half-hour shows of a new series on TV3 called In The Beginning There Was ... Nothing, a sketch-style comedy show.
The show's creators include The Naked Samoans, Oscar-nominated Taika Waititi, and Grammy winner and Flight of the Conchords member Jemaine Clement.
NZ on Air will also pay $485,663 for four one-hour shows called Laughing Samoans at Large on TV2, which will feature the Laughing Samoans comedians Eteuati Ete and Tofiga Fepulea'i.
The short series follows the pair as they tour New Zealand and Australia.
NZ On Air will also invest $1.58 million in a two-hour show, Volcano, on TV3 exploring what would happen after an eruption in Auckland.
It follows Aftershock, a drama about the effects of a huge earthquake in Wellington.
