Sir John White, who served with General Bernard Freyberg in World War II and later became a High Court judge, has died in Wellington aged 95.
Sir John served as Freyberg's personal assistant and ADC from 1940, when the general was appointed to lead the division, until 1945. He ended the war as a major with a military MBE and a mention in dispatches.
Sir John, born in Dunedin, was appointed Solicitor-General in 1966. He served in that post for four years before he was named a judge of the Supreme (later High) Court in 1970. He was knighted in 1981.
