The road into Milford Sound briefly reopened today for the first time since it was closed by a giant slip last Friday.
Crews have been working to clear a 200 metre section of the Milford Road after foul weather caused a landslide that brought down rocks weighing up to 500 tonnes.
The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) said the road reopened to one lane of traffic about 12.20pm today but was closed again at 5pm due to concerns over the weather tonight.
The road was due to reopen again at 10am tomorrow.
NZTA area manager Peter Robinson said opening the road to one lane of traffic had the advantages of enabling slip-clearing work to continue while allowing motorists to get through to Milford Sound.
