The annual loss of people from this country to Australia hit a 19-1/2-year high in August, new figures from Statistics New Zealand show.
The net outflow to Australia on a permanent or long term (PLT) basis was 33,000 in the August year, compared to 25,900 in the August 2007 year.
The number for the latest year was the highest since the February 1989 year.
In the month of August, PLT arrivals as a whole exceeded departures by 500, while on a seasonally adjusted basis the net inflow was 400.
Net inflows during August included 800 from Britain, 500 from the Philippines, and 400 from India.
The net outflow to Australia in the month was 2900, up from 1900 in August 2007.
For the year to August PLT arrivals rose 3700 or 5 per cent from the August 2007 year to 86,700, while PLT departures were up 7500 or 10 per cent to 81,800.
As a result, net PLT migration was 4900 for the year, below the July year level of 5200 but above the recent low of 4600 in the February year.
