KEY POINTS:
Wanganui Mayor and Dancing With the Stars contestant Michael Laws is in agony after breaking his toe during rehearsals for the television show.
But Mr Laws has vowed to continue to take part in the dance competition despite being warned by doctors to rest.
The RadioLive talkback host was rehearsing at a Wanganui dance studio with his partner Lauren de Boeck when the accident happened, confirmed publicist Corey Cooper.
"They have a wooden marker to stop them from crossing a certain line and Michael and Lauren kept bashing their toes on it."
It seems a particularly rigorous rehearsal got the better of Mr Laws, who was rushed to Wanganui Hospital accident and emergency just after 2pm.
A doctor confirmed his right big toe was fractured in two places and advised the mayor to refrain from dancing or athletic activities for the next three to four weeks.
However, Mr Cooper said he had spoken to Mr Laws, who was determined to soldier on and make his dancing debut on the show in 10 days.
