Michael John Kight jailed for child sexual fantasies after police undercover sting

Michael John Kight pleaded guilty to eight charges when he appeared in the Wellington District Court.

A man who fantasised about abducting and sexually abusing children has been sent to jail.

Michael John Kight has been sentenced to 1 year and 11 months in prison at Wellington District Court.

He has previously pleaded guilty to eight charges.

They include making objectionable publications, distributing and possessing objective material, indecent communication and arranging to meet a young person for grooming.

During sentencing, the court heard that child pornography was found on Kight's cell phone and he had sent emails with videos of a child being abused by adult males.

Kite also took screen-shots of a web-page containing "short stories", which depicted disturbing scenes of children being sexually violated by other children and adults.

Police nabbed Kight in an undercover operation where a police officer posed as a 14-year-old boy.

Kight asked the fictitious boy for naked photographs and tried on several occasions to meet up with him.

He fantasised about kidnapping boys in emails and on the gay dating app Grindr.

"In one email you suggested you and the recipient should drive around Wellington, find a child to abduct, and sexually violate him", Judge Barbara Morris said.

While it was accepted Kight made comments regarding kidnapping, there was no allegation he intended to act on them.

Morris said she reduced Kight's sentence because of his guilty plea and mental health issues.

"That is your history, that is your background and no one is suggesting that it's easy to get above that, to turn that around, but I'm sure you have the potential to do that."
