Mfat contacts Kiwis in Moscow after blast

The New Zealand embassy in Russia is contacting New Zealanders in Moscow in the wake of a suicide bomb attack at the city's busiest airport that left dozens dead.

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) spokesman said there were no reports so far of New Zealanders caught up in the blast.

"Our embassy in Moscow is contacting all the New Zealanders registered with the ministry...to check on their wellbeing. They're also talking with Russian authorities to get further information."

MFAT was calling for all New Zealanders in Moscow to register their details on the MFAT safetravel website.

A suicide bomber carrying a suitcase walked into Domodedovo airport at 2.32am (NZT) today and set off a huge explosion, killing 35 people and wounding 180.

The international arrivals terminal was engulfed by smoke after the afternoon terror attack sprayed shrapnel, screws and ball bearings at passengers and workers. Hundreds of people were in the loosely guarded area at the time.

No one has claimed responsibility for the explosion.
