MetService Chief Executive John Lumsden is to retire at the end of October after running the weather service since its inception 14 years ago.
Chairman of the service Dr Francis Small said Mr Lumsden had helped develop the company's culture of innovation.
In the last financial year, MetService reported a profit of $4.1 million, on sales of $30.9 million.
The record result was boosted by the sales of its weather graphics software Weatherscape XT to the BBC.
A successor is expected to be appointed before the end of the year.
