Mercedes' latest E-class aims to deliver the gravitas expected of the brand - along with a sparkling drive.
Its predecessor launched in 2002, and came from a period when Mercedes' quality rep took a bit of a beating. But this E-class underwent a rigorous development programme. Three cars took four years to cover 34 million kilometres during testing, equivalent to 850 circuits of the equator.
Two turbo-diesel and three petrol engines are available. Even the smallest motors offer impressive performance, the 1.8-litre turbo petrol supplying 150kW and 310Nm, the 2.1-litre diesel delivering the same power and a stonking 500Nm of torque. All bar the range-topping V8 are designed to deliver their power without emissions compromise. Odd that the entry-level engines get only five speed autos; six speeds is more frugal.
Still, those engines are tucked into a body that delivers impressive aerodynamics and a quiet cabin.
That cabin is packed with tech, but won't include Europe's speed-limit assist system that recognises speed limit signs and alerts you, as New Zealand signs are a different size. But the E-class does include such safety features as emergency auto braking, nine airbags, plus agility control, which continually adjusts the dampers to road conditions.
Merc is revisiting driving pleasure with a newly sorted chassis and spring and damper rates aimed at maintaining body control, while still supplying a cosseting ride.
As for the coupe, it replaces the now defunct CLK and aims to hit a larger market, and take on Audi's A5 and the BMW 3 series coupe. It's longer and lower than its predecessor, with a brand-new chassis.
It gets the entry-level diesel and all three petrol engines, while inside the dash and switch gear echo the sedan's, though the seats are unique - and mounted lower for a more sporting feel.
You may not admire the new look, but will discover it offers more driving enjoyment than before, without compromising the solid dignity expected. Available from $104,900 for the sedan, and from $119,900 for the coupe; no price yet for the E63AMG.
