Two 20-year-old Christchurch men killed when their motorcycle slammed into a power pole early yesterday morning have been named.
They were Tangohau Kareama, of Aranui, and Tumata Tawha, of New Brighton.
The motorcycle crashed at the intersection of Keyes Rd and Pratt and Rawson streets, in New Brighton, about 3.30am.
Detective Sergeant Earle Borrell said police were investigating reports a second motorcycle may have been on the road at the time.
"Some residents reported hearing what they thought was a second bike leaving the scene," he said.
The cause of the crash was not yet known but speed may have been a factor.
"It may be a few days before that's known. The scene is being forensically mapped by serious crash investigators."
Police were also awaiting the results of autopsies carried out last night.
The deaths have been referred to the coroner for an inquest.
