KEY POINTS:
One man suffered suspected hypothermia after he and a friend spent about 40 minutes treading water when their boat capsized off the Wairarapa coast this morning.
Sergeant Marc Clausen said the capsize happened about 7am off Tora, 45km south of Martinborough.
The men, who were not wearing lifejackets, were able to raise the alarm but a boat suitable to take on the swell was not immediately available.
A local boat was eventually launched and the men rescued. A 70-year-old man was treated for hypothermia and flown to Wellington hospital, police said.
His condition was described as stable.
The incident served as yet another warning to check weather conditions before heading out, Mr Clausen said.
