Men in Canterbury are much more likely to kill themselves than the region's teens, and are committing suicide at more than four times the rate of women.
Figures issued from the Christchurch Coroner's office - relating to the period from January 1, 2000, to June 17 this year - show 94 men died as a result of suicide or apparent suicide, where the cause of death is still to be finally determined at an inquest. In the same period, 21 women committed suicide or apparently committed suicide.
The figures show those aged over 30 were more likely to take their own lives.
Christchurch Victim Support manager Gray Crawford said men with suicidal tendencies tended to avoid seeking help for depression, while women were more open in talking about their emotions.
