Men killed in crash near Ashburton named

Two men killed in fatal road accident on SH1 between Ashburton and Timaru on Tuesday have been named.

They were Dean Martin Rika, 40 of Geraldine, and Roderick Bruce Miles, 42, of Dunedin.

The car the men were travelling collided with a stock truck on Tuesday afternoon at Hinds, some 20km south of Ashburton.

The car burst into flames although a passer-by was able to extinguish the flames quickly.

The impact of the collison caused the truck to roll and up to 30 sheep and lambs had to be destroyed.

The truck driver was not hurt in the accident.

Police are still hoping to talk to anyone who saw the red Mazda travelling in the region between Hinds and Temuka earlier on Tuesday.
