A memorial to murdered backpacker Birgit Brauer has been unveiled in New Plymouth today.
Ms Brauer was killed three years ago today at Lucy's Gully, near Oakura.
Fifty people attended the ceremony at Awanui Cemetery, including police officers who investigated the case, German Embassy officials, members of Rotary who hosted Ms Brauer's parents during the trial, and members of the public.
In an email, Ms Brauer's parents said they felt "enormously moved" by the sympathy and compassion shown by the dedication of the memorial.
The stone features the sam]e inscription and greenstone heart as her headstone in Germany, Radio New Zealand reported.
Michael Wallace was found guilty of Ms Brauer's murder and sentenced to 18 years in prison. He is currently appealing the conviction, challenging the DNA evidence.
