Members of the public stop youths attacking man in Hamilton

A bus driver and members of the public stepped in to stop five youths attacking a man for his cellphone in Hamilton.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the attack on a 25-year-old man in Anglesea St about 9.45pm yesterday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Patterson of the Hamilton CIB said the victim had been using his laptop while waiting for a bus at the Transport Centre when a male rode up to him on a push bike and snatched his cell-phone.

"The victim chased the offender who dropped his push bike in the middle of Anglesea St and the victim grabbed him, demanding his phone back."

Mr Patterson said a struggle ensued during which four associates of the offender entered the fray, attacking the victim as he struggled with his attackers in the middle of the street.

"Security camera footage shows a number of drivers swerving around the melee before a bus driver pulls up and he and members of the public come to the victim's aid," he said.

Police arrested a 15-year-old Hamilton youth, and later located another 15-year-old boy and a 16-year-old in a car park on nearby Barton St.

"This leaves two offenders unidentified and Police would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the attack or who has information on the identity of the offenders."
