The Hamilton City Council has called a public meeting with Melville residents over plans for a youth justice facility in the area.
Mayor Michael Redman said the council had been flooded with complaints from residents of the suburb who said they had not been consulted over Ministry of Justice plans to put an eight-bed "insecure" unit on the corner of Ohaupo and Collins Rds.
The facility would house recidivist offenders with severe behavioural problems while they had therapy.
"What council is hoping to achieve is to act in a facilitation role and to listen to what these people have to say," Mr Redman said.
Ministry officials had been invited to attend the meeting today at Melville High School.
