Meeting on changes to councils

Wairarapa Toastmasters will hold another public information meeting tomorrow night to help people understand the governance options being proposed for Wairarapa's future.

Options being considered include a single Wairarapa council, which takes on regional council functions or for Wairarapa to be part of a Wellington super council.

Toastmasters is a not-for-profit organisation which teaches communication and public speaking skills.

The meeting will allow residents to clarify information before the consultation deadline of February 4.

It follows a previous information evening attended by around 120 people last October.

There will be speakers from a range of business and community groups, including Wairarapa Development Group, Chamber of Commerce, Federated Farmers, JNL Forestry, Sustainable Wairarapa and Maori representatives.

Toastmaster member, Anders Crofoot, will lead the meeting and hoped residents would glean all the information needed to give feedback on the options.

"Our aim is to inform Wairarapa residents, explore the governance options, open up people's thinking and encourage transparency, rather than create a forum for debate."
