KEY POINTS:
Police are investigating whether a medical crisis caused the death of a woman in a car crash, north of Auckland.
Police inspector Ian Brooker said the accident happened this afternoon on State Highway 1 at the intersection with Mahurangi West Road, 3km north of Puhoi.
Mr Brooker said the highway was not blocked but motorists were asked to take care when passing through the scene.
The northbound car left the road on a gentle bend and stopped about 50 metres from the road in a creek bed, he said.
The middle-aged woman was the only occupant of the car.
No other vehicle was involved and investigating officers are not ruling out the possibility that some medical crisis may have contributed to the crash, he said.
Serious Crash Unit staff based at the Harbour Bridge were investigating.
Next-of-kin have not been identified and informed, he said.
