A Cambridge volunteer firefighter is angry his long-service medal is being withheld because he faced domestic violence charges.
Frank Gies was discharged without conviction in the Hamilton District Court on Friday on two charges of assaulting his wife and possessing an unlicensed firearm.
Gies was due to receive a gold star for 25 years' service as a volunteer firefighter on February 23, but the Fire Service stood him down from duties a week beforehand and withheld the award pending an internal investigation.
