Last Saturday's medal round saw some good scores, but Sunday's scores in a par round were just a bit better, which raises the question of the mental aspects on playing in a medal round have an effect on the scores.
The best of the first group on Saturday was Bruce Herangi with a 67 nett, which was one ahead of Matthew Biel in second place, with Niusila Faaiuaso a further stroke back.
In the second group, Phillip Granich led the way on 68, from Layton Kawana on 70 and Ray Stringfellow on 71 nett.
The Solway Pie Shop nearest to the pin on the first hole went to Mark Logan, with Graeme Dick taking the Mitre 10 one on the third, Ray Stringfellow the McAuley's Transport one on the sixth, Matthew Biel the Solway Butchery one on the eighth, Phillip Granich the Alister Bruce Affordable Sheds one on the tenth and Rob McKelvey the Dinah and Deb Keats Professionals Real Estate one on the seventeenth. Holes in two were scored by Phillip Granich, Bruce Herangi and Rob McKelvey.
Sunday's par round had Ian Grant finish with the day's best score of 6 up in the first group. The runner up was Nooroa Rota on 2 up, followed by Kevin Hunter on 1 up. The second group went to Ted Collins and Arona Solomon on 5 up, which was one better than Ray Stringfellow in third place.
Holes in two were scored by David Grantham and Kevin Hunter.
On Tuesday, the veterans group played in a Bisque Par competition. The day's best score was the 11 up returned by Cilva Richmond, with the runner up spot being shared by Yvonne Allsworth, Betty Loader and Daphne Jordan on 10 up.
In the men's first group, Blair Harvey led the way on 9 up, with Fred Brittain the next best on 6 up, while Meki Lauvi and John Mahupuku finished on 5 up. In the second group, Bruce Wilson and Trevor Oliver shared top billing on 7 up, with Ray Stringfellow and Bevan Hefferen on 6 up.
The ladies nearest to the pins went to Nooroa Rota on the third hole and Maria Lauvi on the sixth hole, while the men's one on the sixth went to Meki Lauvi and to Doug Simpson on the seventh hole. Holes in two were scored by Blair Harvey, Nooroa Rita and Daphne Jordan.
This coming Saturday has the men playing the finals of the Golden Matchplay and Match Committee Trophies, while for the ladies it is their competition for the Mills Cup, a four ball best ball competition with drawn partners. For those not involved in the matches, the club competition will be a medal round.
Sunday has the ladies playing a LGU round, while the men have a free day. The club competition will be a stableford round.
