A Waiheke Island ferry has had to return back to Auckland this afternoon due to a mechanical issue.
Fullers spokesperson Delyth Coghlan-Morgan said the 1pm service was forced to head back to downtown Auckland after a problem with the ferry's turbocharger forced the vessel to shut down to one engine as a precaution.
"There had been some kind of mechanical failure but we don't know the details to that yet, but they've shut down one engine for safety.
Ms Coghlan-Morgan said the passengers were transferred onto the next ferry heading to the Hauraki Gulf island, which was delayed to allow them time to get on board.
Passengers aboard the ferry said on Twitter there was a fire onboard, however Fullers said there was no fire.
