Conservative Party candidate Garth McVicar will stand in the Napier electorate.
Mr McVicar announced last week he was taking leave from his role at the Sensible Sentencing Trust to stand for the Conservative Party.
A Hawkes Bay farmer, his entry in the Napier electorate race could split the vote on the right and increase Labour candidate Stuart Nash's chances of winning the seat from National.
Incumbent MP, National's Chris Tremain, is leaving Parliament and new candidate Wayne Walford is standing for it. Mr Nash has not gone on Labour's list and has said he will not run for Parliament again if he does not take Napier.
Conservative Party leader Colin Craig said he believed Napier was a winnable seat for Mr McVicar, who has lived in the area all his life.
