KEY POINTS:
Legendary car designer Gordon Murray - who shocked the world with his McLaren F1 supercar - has revealed plans for a new biopowered supermini.
The diminutive urban runabout would cost just £5000 ($NZ13,000) but aims to offer the same desirability as a new Fiat 500 or Mini.
Made from lightweight materials, it should tip the scales at just 500kg and is expected to get a frugal engine that runs on biofuel.
The brief is to create a cool, eco-friendly car which is cheap to buy, run and could potentially offer financial incentives like tax breaks and free city centre parking.
At this early stage of development, Gordon Murray Design Ltd has codenamed the supermini T.25 but eventually plans to licence the concept to a major manufacturer.
Alongside the T.25, Murray's company is reportedly working on a supercar which will uphold the F1's philosophy of lightweight construction.
It's due for 2010, is also expected to run on biofuel and will cost significantly less than the no-expense-spared F1.
