Foreign Minister Murray McCully will meet Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi during an official visit to Myanmar that starts today.
Ms Suu Kyi, who is contesting a seat in the country's national elections next month, was detained under house arrest by Myanmar's military regime for some 15 years until her most recent release in November 2010.
Mr McCully's four-day visit to the country will include a meeting with Ms Suu Kyi in the country's former capital of Yangon on Wednesday.
He will also meet his Burmese counterpart, Foreign Minister U Wanna Maung Lwin, and other high-level officials in the capital Naypyidaw.
Myanmar's upcoming national elections come after the election last year of President Thein Sein, who is seen as a moderate and has met with Ms Suu Kyi.
