The club competition on Saturday was a stableford round, while the ladies completed the second and final round of their Nancy MacCormack Foursomes.
In that competition, I do not have the final scores, but I do know that Rose Alexander and Di Hunter were the winners from Jean Bayly and Janet Shaw, with Fiona Samuel and Noeline Stevenson in third place.
In the stableford competition, Haira Paku headed the lower handicap group with 40 points, with a three point gap back to Rob McKelvey, Mike Alexander and Francis Nicholls. In the lower handicap group, it was another round under his age that saw Jim Munn in top spot with 41 points, with Syd Whittington 2 points in arrears, while Brian Stevenson and Fred Brittain finished on 38 points. There were just two holes in two for the day, with those going to Des Jepson and Kevin Gibbs.
The Solway Pie Shop nearest to the pin on the first hole went to Francis Nicholls, Ngaire Graham took out the Mitre 10 one on the third hole, Kevin Gibbs the McAuley's Transport one on the sixth hole. Patrick Rimene won the Solway Butchery one on the eighth hole, Des Jepson was very close to the hole on the Alister Bruce Buildings one on the tenth hole, and Mike Alexander took home the Social Committee one on the seventeenth hole.
The men's Marquis Shield team were in action on Sunday at Martinborough, where their opponents were Featherston, who were joint leaders going into the day. This was to prove to be Mahunga's best day so far of this year's competition. With just two players recording losses, it could have been an extraordinary day. But with six wins and four halves, the 8 matches to four result has moved Mahunga up the table.
The players who stayed at home played in a Chicago Stableford round, which saw Fred Brittain at the top of the table with a score of 43 points. Rob McKelvey filled second place on 40 points, followed by Anita Karaitiana on 38 and both Paul Haxton and Jim Munn on 37 points. Rose Alexander and Kip Edmonds scored the only holes in two for the day
The rain won the day on Tuesday, with only a very small field playing in the annual ANZAC day competition for the Haddon Donald Trophy.
While there were few pairings in the best ball medal competition, there were two pairings that finished on 64 nett, with those pairings being Mike Alexander and Di Hunter and Kevin Hunter and Rose Alexander. Mike Alexander scored the only hole in two for the day.
This coming week-end sees the Surf and Turf competition staged for the first time. The surf part has players from both Mahunga and Castlepoint playing at Castlepoint on Saturday, and then both clubs play at Mahunga on Sunday.
The following week-end sees the club hosting the Wairarapa Junior handicap championships over 36 holes, with just one round each day. Tee off time will be a mid-day on both days. Entries are being taken at the club house for this tournament.
