Mazda New Zealand will be fixing vehicles affected by a power steering problem that has sparked a recall in the United States.
The US arm of the company is recalling 215,000 Mazda3 and 5 models built between April 2007 and November 2008.
Local national service manager John Van der Velden says there are some vehicles here that will be fixed, and treated as warranty repairs.
"It is not considered a safety issue in New Zealand," he told nzherald.co.nz.
The fault involves a pipe in the power steering system to become blocked, resulting in a problem with the power steering pump. It does not cause steering to stop working, assures Van der Velden.
"It just causes the steering to become heavier, and only really has an effect at lower speeds," he said.
Customers with cars that require the repair will be contacted by Mazda New Zealand "in the coming months" as parts become available.
The America National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched an investigation into the problem in June after it received 33 complaints alleging steering problems, including three involving crashes.
