A Manukau mayoral candidate is trying to get a concert by Ice Cube cancelled.
The American rapper is scheduled to perform at the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre in Manukau later this month.
Mayoral candidate Len Brown says Ice Cube's music promotes the gangster way of life, and will not help the problems the city has with youth gangs and violence. He claims Ice Cube's music is anti-women and pro-gangster, which will get replicated by the youth in the community.
Mr Brown is trying to put pressure on the CEO of the events centre to cancel the concert, scheduled for August 22.
The promoter for Ice Cube's south Auckland concert disputes claims it will promote violence in the community.
Promoter Camilla Anderson says Ice Cube often sings about the plight of the poor, and is actually a Muslim who is all about family. She suspects the criticism is an election tactic of Mr Brown's.
