Masterton mayoral aspirants serenaded lunchtime shoppers in the main street of the town yesterday alongside a jaunty orchestra of ukulele players.
Nearly 20 people took up the stringed instruments and joined in song with all three Masterton mayoral nominees - Lyn Patterson, Garry Daniell and Gary Caffell - at the door of The Ace Place, an informal learning space that was this week running out of the Sun Court, opposite Regent 3 Cinemas in Queen St, to celebrate Adult Learners' Week/He Tangata Matauranga.
Wairarapa REAP spokeswoman Jude McNeur, earlier said Adult Learners' Week had been celebrated in the region for several years and the idea for a week-long "public drop-in" space aimed to attract education providers and prospective adult students.
She said all local body candidates had been invited to play a ukulele along with the lunchtime ensemble, which ran through a range of tunes from Que Sera to more contemporary numbers.
ACE Places are informal learning spaces that can be anywhere - in homes, offices, parks, libraries, community halls, cafes and in the virtual world.
