The former partner of Whanganui Mayor Michael Laws, and mother of his children, is looking to try her hand at politics.
Leonie Brookhammer, known widely as the former mayoress in the area, yesterday said she would stand for the Whanganui District Council at this year's elections.
"I want to be part of the heart of this beautiful city," said the 41-year-old, who moved to the city in 2001.
"What happens here has always mattered to me and I have given to our community whenever and wherever I could for the past nine and a half years," she said.
"Now I am ready to step forward and stand for election."
Ms Brookhammer, who works in a catering business, said she would stand as an independent.
"Some days I am a waitress ... some days I am a kitchen hand and take my turn peeling potatoes and washing dishes.
"But every day I work hard and am proud of what I do ... You don't need a fancy title to matter."
Mr Laws, from whom she separated this year, yesterday backed her bid, saying she was selling herself short in her announcement.
He praised her for being a proven and expert marketer and said she was a "fighter" for Whanganui's interests around the Horizons Regional Council table.
Mr Laws said people should look at Ms Brookhammer not as the former mayoress but as an independent person with her own skills.
"Leonie should not be judged upon her past relationship with myself, but upon the skills and ability that she potentially brings to the council table. I wish her well."
