One of Wairarapa's iconic coastal farms is on the market, for the first time in 50 years.
Mataikona Station, 17km from Castlepoint, is being offered on behalf of Alic Foreman, who has owned it since 1953.
The sale will be in three titles, the main productive unit being of 880ha divided into 18 paddocks, the largest being 120ha.
The main unit supports about 6500 stock units.
Andy Scott, of PGG Wrightson Real Estate, said it has two woolsheds, excellent water from creeks, dams and the Mataikona River that borders the farm.
"The farm has just taken on lambs to finish when most of the rest of Wairarapa is drying out fast."
The productive heart of the farm is 120ha of river flats on Mataikona silt loam, very similar to Manawatu loam.
The rest of the farm consists of 536ha of moderate-to-steep hill country, and the remainder assessed as ineffective.
Mr Scott said the Mataikona homestead is for sale separately.
It dates from the 1980s and is situated on 8ha, having established gardens.
"It was built from Hinurewa stone and timber milled on the property.
"This may sell as part of the farm, but would also appeal as a holiday home, or an accommodation business."
The coastal block of 485ha runs over a 3km strip and sits just above the rugged coastline, with stunning sea views.
It has potential for subdivision and there is reasonable public boat access.
