Masterton's Ben Campbell was the best of the Kiwis on the opening day of play at the 117th British amateur golf championships being staged at the Royal Troon and Glasgow-Gailes Links.
The New Zealand No 2 Campbell fired a one-over-par 72 at Royal Troon to be tied 69th and five shots back from the overnight leaders Geoff Drakeford (Australia) and Ashley Chesters (England) who both shot rounds of four-under 67 at the respective courses.
New Zealand No 1 Vaughan McCall and Takaka golfer Blair Riordan were two shots back after carding rounds of three-over-par 74 to be tied 145th.
