There was bad news for Gladstone when matches in the Wairarapa Tennis Association's Gawith Shield regional one tennis competition continued on Saturday.
Pre-match speculation had Gladstone strongly fancied to beat Martinborough but all that turned to custard when a mix of injuries and withdrawals forced them to default.
That left the fixture between Masterton and Opaki at the Masterton Tennis Centre as the only regional one match being played and Masterton grabbed the opportunity to improve their standing on the competition table by registering a decisive 7-2 success.
And Masterton dominated the singles where Ian Jurcyluk, Matt Bunny, Greg Williams, George Passi and Zoe Paris all recorded straight set wins and they also won two of the doubles.
The standout player for Opaki was Anlo Van Deventer, who won both her singles and doubles.
Scores, Masterton names first:-
Men's singles: Ian Jurcyluk beat Brett Dymond 7-6, 6-2; Matt Bunny beat Andy Colvin 7-5, 6-1; Greg Williams beat Stu Wyeth 7-6, 7-6; George Passi beat David Heard 6-2, 6-5.
Women's singles: Booke Candy lost to Anlo Van deventer 4-6, 0-6; Zoe Paris beat Charlotte Mossman 7-6, 6-3.
Men's doubles: Jurcyluk and Bunny beat Dymond and Colvin 6-4, 4-6, 6-4; Williams and Passi beat Wyeth and Heard by default.
Women's doubles: Candy and Paris lost to Van De Venter and Mossman 4-6, 6-4, 1-6.
