Forget Venus and Serena. The new sisters of sport are two dead-eyed, dart-throwing girls from the Wairarapa.
Chakira, 9, and Krystal McEntee, 13, won the girls' junior pairs title at the National Junior and Youth Darts Championships held in the Masterton Town Hall.
The pair are from a family full of darts players and sisterly rivalry is alive and well between the pair. "I'm better because I beat her," said Krystal.
Younger sister Chakira said in her defence that Krystal trained more than her.
The sisters said they were happy to win the event as the golden pairing will be split-up at the end of the year with Krystal moving up to Youth grade.
The Wairarapa team coaches and parents of the two girls, Shayne and Pamela McEntee, entered a 14-strong team including all four of their children into the competition.
Seven of the 14 Wairarapa players made the highly acclaimed tournament team with all the McEntee children named in the side. McEntee said he was very happy with how his team performed.
"As a father, and as a coach, I'm proud of all the kids this weekend," he said.
While the snow came down outside, the darts rained inside as 10 teams from around the country systematically peppered the 24 dart boards.
National Darts Council director Trixie Erceg said the tournament was a great breeding ground for young players and the future of the national game looked good.
"A lot of these players will go up and compete in the under 24s next year," she said.
The step up shouldn't be a problem as she said most of them play against adults in club competition anyway.
The tournament was a memorable one for her. "If there's something I'll remember about this tournament it'll be the snow!" she said.
The championship included doubles and singles events in mixed and single sex competitions.
The Junior championship had players aged nine to 13, and Youth championship aged 13 to 17. The National Seniors Competition will be held in Nelson in two weeks.
