Masterton Red Star are to appeal the result of their Wellington under-19 rugby grand final with Northern United played in Wellington on Saturday.
Northern United won 30-13 but Masterton Red Star believe they played as many as three ineligible players during the course of the match.
"We understand these players were making their first appearance for them this season and that is not allowed under the rules," Masterton Red Star coach John Cummings said.
"Obviously we don't like the idea of an appeal but rules are rules and everybody should have to abide by them.
"It's not sour grapes on our part, we just want to make sure everything was done the way it should have been."
Cummings was pleased with the tenacity shown by his side after they faltered before a Northern United first half onslaught and went to the break 15-3 down.
"They (Northern United) came out really strong and we were struggling to stay with them but once we settled down it was a lot more even," he said. "There were plenty of big collisions,it was pretty physical all the way through."
No.8 Mike Wilson and lock Sam McKinstry starred for Masterton Red Star up front with Wilson's effort being particularly noteworthy because he was suffering the effects of 'flu and was kept on the bench for the first 20 minutes.
The Brown brothers, Phillip and Charlie, were typically elusive on the wings and other backs to impress were centre Jordan Waitere and fullback Tyler Dewis.
Phillip Brown and Charlie Brown scored tries for Masterton Red Star and Brock Price kicked a penalty goal.
