Masterton district councillors deferred a final decision on the Masterton Cemetery entrance until engineers ruled out cremation plot disturbance should the gates go back.
Ratepayers determined to see vehicle access to Masterton Cemetery restored directly from Archer Street have hired lawyers to put their case.
Tararua Law is acting for the ratepayers upset at what until recently appeared to be a council fait accompli over the entranceway, until a full meeting of council this
week changed tack.
A letter from the law firm asked in part, for a suspension of a final decision pending "consultation with concerned community members".
It also revealed private financial assistance was on hand to enable the cemetery entranceway to be reinstated to allow vehicles to enter "at no cost to council".
Councillors on Wednesday voted to defer a final decision until engineers investigated the feasibility of restoring car access to the cemetery without cremation plot disturbance.
