Masterton duo John Claydon and Brian Johnson combined to win Bowls Wairarapa's open men's pairs title at the Masterton greens last weekend.
They met their club-mates Ian Monaghan and Warren Fisher in an enthralling final with Claydon securing the 15-14 victory on his very last bowl .
A total of 18 teams contested the event with winners of three or four games qualifying for post-section play.
The first round of post-section play saw Claydon edge out John Polson 16-15 and that put Claydon through to a semi-final against Tony Lee which he won 17-14.In the other semi Monaghan ousted Brian Radich 18-8.
After 12 ends of the final Claydon was ahead 10-8 but Monaghan mounted a strong comeback and by the 16 th end had drawn level at 13-13.Monaghan then grabbed a shot on the 17 th to lead 14-13 and on the 18th and last end the head changed several times before Claydon came to the mat with his last bowl, holding the shot and needing one more for the win. And he did the business to give his team a thrilling 15-14 advantage.
