MASTERTON men Grant Fawcett (left) and Faavae Sefo who can rip a log in half with a cross cut saw quicker than they can with a chainsaw have made the New Zealand Wood Chopping Team to compete at the Sydney Easter Show in March.
The two, who spend their working days honing racing axes and saws at Tuatahi, in Solway, spend most of their free time training for competitions, and their hard work paid off last weekend.
Fawcett and Sefo put their skills on the line at the New Zealand team trials in Taranaki and succeeded in making the senior team to compete in tests against both Australia and the United States, in Sydney.
For Fawcett, selection is a first for the senior side but Sefo is a old hand- the Easter tests will be the fifth time he has represented his country at that level.
Although both are accomplished axemen they specialise in the double saw event.
Fawcett said the two have put in " heaps of practice" to get this far.
"But we will be putting in plenty more now."
