One of the most famous names in New Zealand squash - Stu Davenport - will play an exhibition match when the Masterton Squash Club opens its two new glass-backed courts tomorrow evening.
Davenport ranked as highly as No3 on the world stage during the height of his playing career. He will engage in battle at 6pm with former Masterton player Willie Bicknell, who has been ranked in the country's top 10 and is now development officer for Squash Wellington.
The opening series of matches in the Masterton club's open tournament is also being played tomorrow night. The tournament has drawn an excellent entry of 90 players who will compete in divisions according to grading.
Josh Greenfield, from Palmerston North, is the No1 seed in the men's A grade - as befitting his New Zealand top four ranking.
Wellington's Sam Atkins and Bicknell should also make a bold showing as should another former Wairarapa player, Kent Darlington, now of Wanganui, while special interest will be taken in Tamsyn Leevy, a highly-ranked New Zealand women's representative who has been given dispensation to play in both the men's and women's A grade sections.
Leevy is seeded sixth in the men's event, just ahead of locals Matt Spooner and Malcolm Wyeth and Pahiatua's Justin Brown.
Leevy will be the hottest of favourites to win the women's A grade title with the main opposition likely to come from Masterton's Gerry Brooking.
All finals will be played on Sunday afternoon.
