A 78-year-old Masterton driver is in a critical condition after losing control of his vehicle and plunging 20 metres from a rural road east of the town on Monday.
Police sergeant Chris Megaw said the man is in a critical but non-life-threatening condition in Wairarapa Hospital with arm injuries after crashing into a boundary fence on Bennett's Hill and ending up in the paddock down the bottom of the bank, "so a 20-metre drop."
"He managed to get out of the car and he was helped from the scene and he was actually taken to hospital by bystanders," he said.
"It was a short time later that we were actually notified, so we didn't actually attend nor did the ambulance as such."
Sergeant Megaw said that staff from Fulton Hogan were among those who helped and that the man had experienced a medical problem that caused him to lose control of the blue Daihatsu Terios.
