A driver was lucky to escape serious injury after he left the road shortly after crossing the Waingawa Bridge into Masterton yesterday evening, ploughing into a chain-link fence and a culvert at the intersection of Ngaumutawa Rd and High St.
Two fire appliances and an ambulance were called out at 7pm, but the male driver, the only person in the car, was able to get free of the wreck and walk.
Paramedics checked the man over.
The crash destroyed 10m of fence belonging to the Norwood Farm Machinery Centre, but police at the scene thought it might have at least slowed him down.
They had yet to determine what caused the driver to leave the road.
