The Wool Shed in Masterton celebrated National Wool Week yesterday by opening its doors for free and inviting people in to explore the shearing museum and watch live sheep shearing.
Two shearers gave about 15 sheep a haircut, using a winter comb so they still had enough wool to stay warm during the cold season, giving visitors the chance to see it is done up close.
Shearers and Wool Shed trustees Scotty Stewart and Graham Checkley said the open day was a way to let young people know about the museum in the lead up to the school holidays.
Mr Stewart shore his first sheep in 1955 and since then has shorn about a million sheep.
Mr Checkley said shearing is a great job as far as friendships and friendly competition goes.
