Fire authorities in the Kaipara District in Northland are managing to contain a massive blaze on the Pouto Peninsula.
It began on Thursday afternoon and spread over more than 100 hectares in a forestry block, and at one stage threatened a home.
Kaipara District Council rural fire officer Fiona Vessey says the national rural fire staff were sent home yesterday, and today there are 53 local fire officers on the ground.
She says the fire is definitely not out yet, but they have it contained, which is the first step.
Fiona Vessey says investigators have worked out the fire started just off a forestry road, but the exact cause is not yet known.
