Mary Berrington's family continues to look for answers a year after her strange disappearance

It is an anniversary no family would want to celebrate, but one Mary Berrington's family is having to deal with today.

Today marks the last day anyone saw or heard from their mother and grandmother.

The 62-year-old was last seen on the evening of Tuesday, July 19, last year. She had attended a community dinner at the St Joseph's Church in Upper Hutt.

She walked home afterwards and spoke to her daughter on the phone about 9.30pm.

Berrington, who has a degree of mental impairment and is bipolar, was in good spirits, her daughter told police.

Berrington, who lived in a flat on Fergusson Drive, was reported missing the next day.

Later, a witness reported seeing a woman matching her description walking towards Fraser Cres around midnight.

Despite a large-scale search and rescue effort - which involved both authorities, members of the community and family and friends - there has been no sign of her.

Her bank account has also not been touched.

A year on since her disappearance, Berrington's family have made yet another heartfelt appeal for anyone who may have information about her whereabouts.

"As a family, we are still trying to come to terms with the ongoing situation of mum's disappearance.

"We never thought it would go on this long. We hope we have some answers one day soon.''

The family acknowledged those who had helped them over the last year; thanking them for their continued support.
