KEY POINTS:
School pupils often read story books penned by adults but Anna Chambers and her classmates turned the tables yesterday.
The 10-year-old recited a story about a magical hospital room at the launch of a new book, Supertastic Marvelistic, that she helped to write.
Two classes at Stanley Bay School in Devonport wrote the stories and poems in the book, which also included an item from renowned writer Kevin Ireland.
Money raised will go to the child cancer charity Kenzie's Gift, set up by North Shore mother Nic Russell in memory of her late daughter.
Ms Russell shed a tear as Anna read If I Built a Hospital Room aloud, listing features of a make-believe room.
"I would put my hand on a handprint, and my bed would immediately drop into the floor, go around a roller coaster, and into my secret agent hideout where there would be toys beyond my wildest dreams," Anna read.
Stories and poems were on topics as diverse as a whale who entered a talent quest and a rooster that couldn't crow.
Teacher Catherine Kelsey said the book was unusual because it was written by children for children.
