Martinborough's armed vigilantes are back on the job despite police attempts to disband them.
The 57-member community group was set up last month after a spate of burglaries in the town, patrolling the streets at night, recording numberplates and watching for suspicious behaviour. Sources told the Dominion Post the group carried weapons, although this was denied by members.
Police became involved last week after a shot was fired during a confrontation between patrol members and local youths.
One patrolman was arrested and faces firearms charges, another has been questioned and may also be charged.
The two men involved in the incident have now been barred from patrols and the group was to meet with police later this week.
