Newcomers Martinborough have qualified for the main championship round of Netball Wairarapa's premier one competition.
They celebrated their feat of being one of six teams to play off for the major title with a hard-fought 39-35 win over Carterton New World Lynx in wet, windy and wintry conditions at the Colombo Rd courts in Masterton on Saturday.
Joining Martinborough in the race for the premier one title will be defending champions Harcourts, Pioneer Blue, Celtic, Wairarapa College and St Matthew's Collegiate.
Harcourts, who had been surprisingly beaten by Carterton New World Lynx seven days before, bounced back with a 32-22 victory over Makoura College in the last of the preliminary round matches on Saturday while Pioneer Blue pulled away to beat Baywide Gladstone 43-22 after an evenly contested first half.
Wairarapa College A and Celtic were expected to have a battle royal and so it transpired with the students scraping in by just the solitary goal, 35 to 34, while St Matthew's beat Trevs 1 44-22.
